Neuro-Affirming Therapy
Neuro-affirming therapy is rooted in the belief that neurodiversity is not a deficit to be fixed or masked. This approach recognises and values the different strengths, perspectives, and needs of neurodivergent individuals, aiming to empower them to live authentically and confidently.
Instead of trying to make neurodivergent people appear or behave more “neurotypical,” neuro-affirming therapists focus on understanding and supporting each person as they are. Therapy is collaborative and client-led, with goals centred on improving quality of life, self-acceptance, and well-being, never on suppressing natural traits or enforcing conformity to neurotypical standards. Neuro-affirming practice also respects different communication styles, sensory needs, and self-advocacy, and it challenges ableist assumptions about what is “normal”.
Ultimately, to be neuro-affirming is to create a safe, respectful space where neurodivergent people can explore their identities, develop their strengths, and access support that truly fits their needs.
